Andy Murray said after Great Britain was eliminated from this year’s Davis Cup that it “may be the last time” he plays in front of a crowd in Glasgow.
Murray won 32 of his 35 singles matches in the Davis Cup, leading his team to victory in 2015 with stellar performances in Glasgow against the United States and Australia along the way. On Sunday afternoon, he beat Dmitry Popko of Kazakhstan 6-4, 6-3 in a meaningless match after Great Britain had already lost to the United States and the Netherlands in the group stage.

Given his advanced age and history of injury and inconsistency, Andy Murray may not be a reliable Davis Cup pick in the next seasons.
In this year’s tournament, he and Joe Salisbury went 0-2. With Cameron Norrie and Dan Evans above of him in the ATP Tour singles rankings and Jack Draper on the rise, Murray will have to work hard to remain in captain Leon Smith’s good graces.
Murray expressed his regret at having to play a dead rubber in front of a sold-out crowd at the Emirates Arena, but he also expressed his gratitude for the supporters’ “wonderful” support.
At first, I struggled,” Murray said. There’s no way to manufacture emotion on the field, so it’s difficult to figure out how to play. Even while it would have been nice to win today, it’s not like anything else would change if I don’t. As a result, I find that aspect of sports to be very enjoyable.
It was fantastic, however. The supporters have really come through for us today. It was the busiest day of the week there. It was great to perform in front of an audience, and I appreciate the opportunity.
Perhaps I will never again get to play in front of such a large audience for Britain or in this stadium.
If this is the last time they’ve helped our squad, it’s been incredible. The support of the fans in several of our games has been crucial. They are among my favorite tennis-related recollections.
Murray said that his performance dipped in the second set against Popko because he was worried that it would be his last match of the tournament.
Today, at 5-2 in the second set, Murray said, “I just thought about it at around that point.”
As I was playing the match, I realized that I hadn’t given it any thought before the weekend or during any of the doubles matches.
At the end, as my concentration waned and my emotions flared up, I could feel that.
In 2023, Britain will once again play host to the finals’ group stage, albeit the location is up in the air.
To become hosts, though, they must first prevail in a play-off.

The British eventually beat Kazakhstan 2-1 in a dead rubber match that mattered solely for pride and third place.
Great Britain secured third place in Group D thanks to a 7-6 (7-2), 6-7 (9-11), 7-6 (7-4) victory by Neal Skupski and Joe Salisbury against Alexander Bublik and Aleksandr Nedovyesov. Earlier in the day, Bublik had defeated Britain’s No. 1 tennis player, Cameron Norrie, 6-4, 6-3.
With a 2-1 victory against Sweden, Italy remained unbeaten in Group A.
Matteo Berretini defeated Elias Ymer in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, but an astonishing comeback by Mikael Ymer against Jannik Sinner saw him win in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini of Italy won the doubles match 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 against Andre Goransson and Dragos Nicolae Madaras of Sweden to force a tiebreaker.
Roberto Bautista Agut and Carlos Alcaraz won their respective singles matches to help Spain to a 3-0 victory against South Korea in Valencia.
Group C winners Germany defeated their Australian rivals, Germany, 2-1, with wins by Jan-Lennard Struff against Max Purcell and the German doubles team of Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz.
